Rosemary Laney

A graduate of the Botanical Painting Diploma course at the EGS, Rosemary now combines her twin passions for painting and natural sciences by working as a botanical artist from her studio in Sussex.

Philosophy

I believe all plants have characters. Some are beautiful romantics; some are bold show-offs, some delicate introverts, whilst others are bullying thugs. A successful botanical painting should accurately capture the character and 3-dimensional quality of the plant whilst being a work of art in its own right.

For inspiration I look to the exquisite works of 18th century artist Pierre-Joseph Redoute, court painter to Marie-Antoinette.

Biography

I have always had a love of painting and although self-taught I supplemented my student years by painting and selling botanical art. However on leaving university, I worked as a PhD scientist for Procter and Gamble in Surrey.

Twelve years later my husband and I moved back to Sussex and with the arrival of my daughter Katie in 1997 I began to concentrate on painting as a career.

Following courses in 1999 in botanical illustration and miniature painting techniques, I began painting and selling miniatures for a Dorset gallery and was a featured artist in Dorset Life magazine. I successfully exhibited miniatures in Dorset where my work is held in several private collections.

In 2005 I enrolled on the Botanical Painting Diploma course at the EGS in London under the tutelage of Anne-Marie Evans and Helen Allen and was awarded my Diploma (distinction) in 2007. Since then I have been concentrating full-time on botanical commissions and works for the forthcoming Amicus Botanicus Plants for Life exhibition to be held in London in 2008.
